AV AMPLIFIED!//Distortion- Baby Metal

Welcome once again to AV AMPLIFIED!, where we feature the hottest music videos on the scene! This time, we are featuring everybody’s most favorite kawaii metal band: Baby Metal!

There seems to have been much debate as far as this band goes. I know a lot of those “die hard” metal fans who like to go around saying what is truly “metal” and what isn’t. But when you listen to Baby Metal, sorry to break it to you, but it’s about as metal as it gets! It’s the perfect combination of classic J-pop and modern death metal. These brutal babes will rip your heart out, take a bite out, and shove it right back in.

I, for one, just happily accept it.

Baby Metal has made quite the statement in the world, topping charts and performing giant festivals right alongside some of the greatest metal artists of all time including, but not limited to: the Big 4 (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer), Korn, Rob Zombie, Guns N Roses, Judas Priest and many others to come! I have also seen them in pictures with Alice Cooper, so you know that if they are Alice approved, they just have to be great.

Baby Metal have just released their newest single “Distortion”, which continues on the saga in the Metal Resistance through the release of Episode VII Apocrypha of Metal Resistance – The Chosen Seven . This was in celebration of their 2018 tour! (Dates below)

Unfortunately for me and many others, the tour is pretty small so they won’t be coming to Wisconsin, but that doesn’t mean they won’t have a date in the future for us! (PLEEEEEEEEEAAAASSSEEEEE!!!! P.S I wouldn’t say no to free tickets!)

With all that being said, let’s take a look at their new video– “Distortion”.

This tune doesn’t mess around. It’s brutal right from the very first blast beat! Fast, brutal and triumphant, with a hint of an industrial metal element in the mix. The angelic pop voices of Su-metal, Yuimetal, and Moametal burst through the thunder of the band, yet they never steal the spotlight. It always merges so well, and that continues to hold solid in “Distortion”.

In this video, we are introduced to the Chosen Seven as they appear in the apocalyptic cityscape ready for battle. Each character is depicted to be unique from one another and have each their own unique ability. Throughout the video, the warriors are battling large demonic entities.

This video definitely goes all out. Beautiful cinematic effects, breath-taking costume designs, and the makeup is flawless. It brings the whole story to life. When I watch this video, I feel like I’m watching a trailer for a movie that’s about to be the next summer block buster. Although it’s short, the whole experience is memorable!

This video also raised a lot of questions as to what has happened to Yuimetal, and who exactly these “Chosen Seven” are. From what I have gathered, Yuimetal is still very much in the band but will not be touring due to a “medical condition”. Hopefully all is well for her as many Baby Metal fans are worried for her, including myself.

Regardless, I’m looking forward to what is to come in the career of Baby Metal.

“Baby Metal’s challenge for world domination continues and only the Fox God knows what the future will hold.” – Baby Metal Official

Weekend Warriors//Punk/Metal Crossover Interviews//X-Method

Welcome to Weekend Warriors! This time we reached out to California to talk with the metal/punk crossover band X-Method.

X-Method is from the San Francisco Bay area and Central Valley California. The band has been together for approximately three years, but the concept of X-Method was born in 1999 by the lead singer Abby.  Since then, they have had many accomplishments in their career, including the release of their first album “Sex, Alcohol, Rebel Music”, and had some tour dates here in the U.S. with the legendary thrashers D.R.I!

Recently, X-Method has been signed onto Rock Syndicate Records, and to celebrate they will be releasing a brand new EP for all of us, “Apparition of the Crypt“, which will be out soon! They also have a new tour coming up featuring the band Toxin, and are even going to be in Europe!

With all kinds of news like this in the making, we had to speak with X-Method founder Abby and find out what we were to expect and other exciting details about this heavy hitter!

We have a lot of experience with our scene in the Midwest and know it well, however we would love to know what the scene is like in the Bay area. Could you tell us a bit about what it’s like there and what your impression of it is?

It’s super exciting– a lot of bands know each other and hang out with each other as well. You could be at a show and run into one of the guys from Exodus, Death Angel, etc.etc., at any given time. They are all super cool too; it’s more like a metal family vibe out here and it’s been that way since I was a teenager.

We saw that X-Method has its own fan club known as Method Militia United. What can you tell us about this killer fan club?

It started out as a pun from a few friends and fans and it grew into an actual thing. I travel a lot so I know many people in different countries so I decided to create that page as a way of uniting all these different people from different countries, states etc., that support us.

To join the MMU, you can find the link on the X-Method page in the “Groups” tab.

You have a tour coming up called the Primal Rage Tour with the band Toxin. What are some of the venues you are looking forward playing most? Or what are some of your favorite places along the way?

By far one of my favorite venues is The Shredder in Idaho– they showed us so much love when we tour with D.R.I. a few years back. We will be hitting a lot of states we have not played before so we are looking forward to every show; it’s always fun to meet new metalheads and gain new fans.

27164454_900745866751839_2518329925321821619_o

You also have a tour coming up in Europe as well! You’re playing the Amplified Festival in the U.K, what is that all about? Have you played this festival before or is this your first time?

This will be our first time. We are beyond honored to be playing in The U.K. It’s a dream come true. The band I am looking forward to seeing the most is Dustbolt from Germany, they are a great thrash band. We will continue on to play various countries in Europe that are still in the works so I could not give any for sure dates and countries yet other than the first day of the tour July 7th in The U.K.

Your new EP “Apparition of the Crypt” is your first release under Rock Syndicate Records. What is your inspiration behind this release and what can fans expect from this EP?

Fans can expect pure heavy riffs, sick lyrics and topics that might offend the thin skinned. I get inspired by many things, in regards to the topics on this EP it was more a vent on things that piss me off about society. I personally feel people are getting butt-hurt behind the wrong things, the topics I address are the topics society should be mad about.

Yes, if all goes as planned we will be releasing two new music videos this year but sorry no spoilers, ha ha! Everyone will have to wait and see what happens.

AV Amplified!// Basement Nasty- The Red Flags

Welcome to AV Amplified! the section of Music Maehem where we review the latest in music videos from the local scene! The band filling this honored slot is none other than The Red Flags, which I am always happy to rant and rave about.

The title for this single and music video for The Red Flags is called “Basement Nasty.” Immediately, the video starts off in a flash of bright, contrasting colors that are present throughout the rest of the video. The song itself is reminiscent of a song that would have fit right in somehow in both the 60’s and still perfectly well today in 2018, and the video is a wonderful complement to that.

The video takes place in a basement, appropriately, lit by ropes of Christmas lights. Throughout the video, you can see the words “FUCK YOUR EARS” plastered on the wall in the background where the band takes turns being featured on the microphone. The phrase is also the chorus to the song, and I can’t think of a more suitable one—because this song is just a two-and-a-half minute long EAR-GASM!

I can’t get enough of the double vocals featured throughout the verses from both lead singer/guitarist Gabe and bassist Ally. Gabe’s harsh rap-esque lyrics and vocals with Ally’s melodic vocals being sang simultaneously supplement each other beautifully, creating a unique harmony to the entire song. Jonah plays his heart out on the skins in the background, and his two-beat-and-pause approach in the beginning of each verse pairs amazingly with the guitar riffs.

As I said in my previous post about this band, they have a Rage Against the Machine meets White Stripes vibe, and this video is a shining example to ring true to that notion.

Long story short, this whole production gave me an ear-boner. The Red Flags kick ass and so do this song and video!

The official release date is March 28th, 2018, and the video will be live on their YouTube channel, which you can find here :

Don’t forget to like them on Facebook of course also!!  https://www.facebook.com/theredflags/

Extended Play//Boy Band- Pillbook

Pillbook: a powerful, brash, young sludge-pop duo from Chelsea, Massechusetts. The masterminds behind this project are Aaron Garcia and Randy Aguilar. A member of their band dropped out during their first tour, but they didn’t give up, and because of that they have created their own destiny. Their first EP Boy Band, which was released through Five By Two Records, is available now! (Link at the end of the article)

Pillbook influences come from various 90’s grunge bands and modern bands such as Death from Above, ’68, and Superheaven, but also modern artists such as Kanye West, Lil Pump, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. This is reflected throughout the EP. This album really pulls at the heart of teenage angst from start to finish.
“When The Sun Comes Up” captures your emotions right away with powerful guitar hooks as well as powerful and passionate vocals. This song is one I personally favor because of the grunge style and attitude.
“Skipping The Lines On The Sidewalk” is an easy-to-listen-to tune that reminds me of 90’s Indie bands. This is a song with very high nostalgic value– one of those songs you listen to during the summertime and reflect upon in the winter when all of those good times become memories. They also created a video for this track. You can experience it in the link below!

“Hard Hearts” brings the pace up a bit from the others, coming at you fast, heavy, and grainy. This tune very much brings the listener to life. In a way, it reminds me of something I would have heard in the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. It has a few slow, clean breakdowns as well, which gives this track a really nice balance. The bass within this EP is really prominent which I feel only serves to create more emotion, but I especially love it here. Personally, I feel that a band without a bassist is like a BLT sandwich without the bacon!
“Boyskissboysandgirlsownthierbodies” is a song with lyrics we can relate to. It creates a feeling of wonder, causing us to reflect upon ourselves. My favorite part of the lyrics is:
Do we all have our own destined expiration date
But you tell me to get on my knees before it’s too late
And we all die young or old and we end up in the ground

It reflects within that no one is better than anyone else and we all have our place, as well as reminding us that no one lives forever and we all will die one day no matter what.

29258100_1871684262903970_2162867353270878208_n
“Stay Laz” has a little bit of everything, which makes this song the best one to end this EP on. Why? Because it leaves you wanting more!! The drums throughout the album are so on point, but it’s especially reflected in this track. As it goes from a slow and even tempo, with random outbursts and then goes flawlessly into a fast-pace tempo. There is a beautiful and pleasant breakdown within also which has been a common element featured per each track. As this album begins to conclude, we even get a taste of metal-esque style they are capable of in the end.
I’m sure you’re thinking, “Metal? What?” but yes. Trust me. Metal. Kind of thrash metal to be specific, which I thought added a very unique flavor and ended this EP on a great note.
This EP is very impressive and they were not kidding when they said the music was “mature” for their age. This amazing teen duo has so much talent between the two of them and I see a very successful career ahead of them!
See them live March 30th at Raven Worcester in Worcester, Massechusetts!

Front Row//Seisma

SEISMA is a self-described “monster movie metal” band from Madison, Wisconsin. Inspired by Kaiju monster movies (i.e. movies like the original Godzilla) as well as many different genres of metal, SEISMA is groovy and heavy and brings a much needed breath of unique and satisfyingly weird air to the metal scene, especially here in Wisconsin.

Their newest album, SEISMA II: The Land Out Of Time, is a sequel in the story of their first album ***/ˈsīzmä/***. Both albums are available now on their Bandcamp.

This week for our Front Row Friday installment, I headed out to the Wisco (again) on Willy St. in Madison to catch one of my favorite bands to have come out of this city.

Gear-view Mirror // Dustin Bennett // Collectors’ Edition

Hello there, local readers and Gear enthusiasts. This week, my words and rambling will be kept short as this is my attempt at a live video collectors’ edition of Gearview Mirror in an effort to change it up for you  guys and gals.

Inspiring this Idea is the humble and awesome Dustin Bennett of  Forcefield. As you will see on the video, he has quite a collection of axes and other gear alike. I had my band brother Jonathan “The Icelander” Nicewander bring me down and aid me at Dustin’s home shop in Oshkosh to get a better look and to chat with Dustin and his counterpart, also a guitarist in Forcefield, Kurt Losinske.

Please check out the video, give any feedback on it, and as always, my friends, thrash fast and headbang hard!

Be sure to check out Forcefield on Facebook:
