Weekend Warriors//Metal Interviews//Dread

Hello and welcome to Weekend Warriors! We are featuring one of the newest members of Rock Syndicate’s arsenal of brutal heavy metal: Dread! Currently located in Los Angeles, CA, Dread just released their newest album, From This World To The Next. If you are like myself and love old school 80’s style thrash metal, then this is the band for you! They are the epic combination of Judas Priest and old Iron Maiden (when Paul Di’anno was around) and we at Music Maehem just can not get enough!

We had the honor of speaking with Taylor Dread (drummer and vocals) on what it means to come togetheri in celebration of their newest release!

For starters, you just released your newest album From This World To The Next, which is your first release since 2010’s album, Brace For Destruction. Was the newest album in the making for that long or had you guys taken time away from the scene?

Actually, it wasn’t that long at all. AD and myself wrote the whole album and recorded it in under three months all in all. We always knew at some point we’d make music together again, whether in Dread, or something completely new. In 2015, just before I had moved to Los Angeles, we did one last “farewell show,” and even though AD and myself merely only talked about it in passing, that show seemed to be the spark that lit the fire again. Now, it took a couple of years before we really got something going. I started to build this festival, the Los Angeles Strikefest, and I couldn’t imagine Dread not being apart of it. So we talked about possibly reuniting for the fest, but that if we did, it would have to be full time. If we’re gonna do this again, it’s gotta be all chips in. So, at the time, we decided to just do a short, three song EP. But as soon as AD sent me over the riffs to Blitzkrieg, I knew that it had to be a full length. We both just dove right into the creative process head first. It was almost as if all of this material was just boiling inside of us, waiting to be let out.

You’re newest album, not to be that guy, but it was amazing! I could definitely tell you are influenced by bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but with that being said, what are some of your personal inspirations for this album?

Hey, there’s never anything wrong with being THAT guy! That’s what keeps music alive, all the love and support we show to bands. We are honored.

But yes, as far as influences, the more obvious ones are on our sleeves so to speak. Priest more than Maiden though. For our other influences, I think you might be surprised. We’re music lovers, and the stuff that actually inspires us not only musically and creatively, but also emotionally, ranges from spectrum to spectrum. Our biggest influences range from Billy Idol, The Cult, Thin Lizzy, to Loudness, Ratt, LA Guns and Armored Saint.

With every new release comes a new tour! Tell us where Dread is headed?

Well, right now, our comeback show is on June 22nd, on the first day of The Los Angeles Strikefest, which features Nasty Savage, Exciter, Razor, Nocturnus AD, Morbid Saint, our brothers in Night Demon and our brothers (and sister!) in Blade Killer, plus a whole lot of other incredible bands. We figured we’d get our teeth sunk into this show first, and then plan accordingly afterwards.

34674992_2463522496998643_547869648935190528_n
Speaking of touring, I myself am a thrasher at heart. Absolutely my favorite metal genre. So, we all do this I know it: Put together one killer tour with your dream bands, your band included and tell me what you would call the tour. No pressure. Ready? GO!

Well, that’s a hard one. For me, it would be Billy Idol, The Cult, Ratt and LA Guns. It would never happen, so I’d call it “The Tour that Never Was.”

What words of wisdom can you pass on to aspiring bands? How do you keep the Dread dream alive?

Hmmm. Well, I would say you gotta stay driven and work hard. You have to constantly take risks and put yourself out there. Never give up, and always look at failures as lessons. Don’t give up, and always pick yourself back up when you get knocked down. And the most important thing, chase the dream. Not the money, not the girls, not the ego boosts, but the dream. Which lies in the music.

Would you like to give any special shout-outs to anyone who has helped you all along the way?

Personally, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to Dan Dismal. On top of being a partner on the Strikefest festival, he’s been like a big brother. I’d also like to thank Jarvis Leatherby of Night Demon for being a good friend and linking me up with Dan, it has forever changed my life.

Also, who is your artist and where can we find their other work? I love me some Satan-tastic artwork!

Thank you! That means alot! The artist is Mario Lopez, and you can find his work here: marioestuardol.wixsite.com

Any final thoughts?

Not much besides a big thank you for taking the time to interview a band like this. Be on the lookout, it goes up from here.

Weekend Warriors//Metal Interviews// Lords Of The Trident

Welcome once again to Weekend Warriors! Today we are featuring an interview with some actual warriors–this band of barbarians from our very own Madison, Wisconsin known as Lords Of The Trident! To help you get to know this savage band we have the members:

LordsGroup2017_3_sm

Fang VonWrathenstein – Lead Vocals
Baron Taurean Helleshaar – Lead Guitar
Asian Metal – Lead Guitar
Pontifex Mortis – Lead Bass
Master “Herc” Hercule Schlagzeuger – Lead Drums

Their biography is truly a tale to behold (we strongly encourage you to read it!), but instead we will feature their smaller summary:

Our metal’s so pure that only diamonds can scratch it, and usually the diamonds are the ones that end up getting hurt in the end. Our amps are so loud, Manowar knocked on our door and asked us to “please turn down”. You think you’re bad? While you’re watching our sweep picking wondering how we bend space-time to fit all the notes in, we’ll punch you right in the face without missing a beat. If you like battle, bloodshed, axes, fire, and losing limbs, then mosh your way to the front row and receive your free ticket to Valhalla. If you don’t like these things – too bad. We’re playing anyway, and we’ll make sure to steal your girlfriend in the process.

We have been hearing so much about Lords Of The Trident, that we simply couldn’t wait to feature them! After all, we love ourselves some good ‘ole power metal!!

Behold! The Music Maehem interview with Lords Of The Trident!!

I read your bio on your web page, and it was very well thought out! That is one epic metal tale! For those who have just recently heard of you, what can you tell us about yourselves?

Hails to all your readers! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Lords of the Trident — the band that will soon rule over all of humanity with an iron fist — know this: we are the most METAL band on earth! We combine elements of traditional, power, and modern heavy metal into a perfect concoction of face-melting goodness, and we use this unrelenting power to put on one of the best live shows you’ve ever seen. Take a listen to one of our songs – if your head doesn’t explode in the first thirty seconds, you’re probably a strong barbarian warrior, and should join our minion army!

On June 22nd and 23rd, you will be making your way to the Great White North with show dates in Canada– tell us a bit about that!

Yes! We’re rather excited to head back to the land to the North. Last time we crossed the border, we had a larger Canadian tour planned, but alas – our TERRIBLE touring van prevented us from completing our voyage. CURSE that evil, evil van! I’m glad it’s currently crushed into a small cube (and likely still on fire). Now that we’ve got a more reliable touring vehicle (that we just paid off, thanks to our Patreon backers!), we’re going to try a short stint first, and see how it goes. Assuming our steed stays reliable, we may just try for a longer tour in the very near future. Either way, I’m going to be enjoying the scratch-n-sniff money that Canada uses. Did you know it smells like maple syrup? I’ve also been told by reliable sources that Justin Trudeau also uses that scent as his aftershave. Mmmmm….breakfast-y.

Your Patreon is very successful! That’s really impressive stuff! Can you please elaborate on what fans can find on your Patreon? What are some things that your fans can get if they sign up to be a Patron?

Absolutely! Patreon has been our greatest boon since the invention of fire-proof underwear, and we do our best to shower our Patreon backers in special prizes and exclusive merch. After all, anyone who pledges to our Patreon must first complete a test of strength and fortitude. Backers at certain levels get things like Patreon-exclusive shirts (that the band prints ourselves), live show bootlegs, fully-mixed acoustic covers, and more! We also create exclusive video content for our backers like Fang’s Metal Beer Club, the TRIDENTCast, and more content that we have planned for the near future. We send out so much stuff, it really is one of the BEST METAL DEALS on the internet. Check it out at Patreon.com/LordsOfTheTrident .

I saw you also started a Kick Starter to begin building the funding for your newest album, Shadows From The Past, which is lucky number 7, and due to be released in August. What are we to expect from this album? Paint us a pretty word picture.

Shadows from the Past is undoubtedly the most complex, mature, and intensely METAL album we’ve ever put together – EVER! We’ve been hard at work on this album for a number of years, and it includes guest appearances from Unleash the Archers and Psychostick, as well as a full symphony orchestra, choir, string quartet, and more. Anyone who’s a fan of our previous album is in for a treat, because we feel that our songwriting, recording quality, and mix has improved exponentially over the last three years. I feel very strongly that it’s going to contain some immediate fan favorites, and perhaps some songs that some may argue are the best we’ve ever written. We’re all incredibly excited to release it!

34395347_10156608470579427_4230979211071848448_o

You also have the release party as well at the Mad With Power Fest! That sounds like a killer time! Fill us in!

For years we’ve struggled to be included on certain fests around the states, so we decided: “TO HELL with them! We’ll just make our own fest!” So we did! And we combined two of our favorite things in life: Heavy Metal and ARCADE GAMES! Mad With Power is our yearly celebration of some of the best underground and independent heavy metal bands in North America, combined with an unmatchable free-play arcade experience! We line the entire venue with TONS of arcade games on free-play, and this year we’re going to have access to some exclusive cabinets that you can’t see or play anywhere else IN THE WORLD! Every year our fest has grown, and this year is the strongest ever. Those denizens interested in sampling the bands and/or attending should grab a ticket at MadWithPowerFest.com

Just out of curiosity, do you guys make all of your own videos? Or is there a guy on the inside you would like to give a shout out to?

We do! I (Fang) make all the videos from scratch. Adding fire and explosions to videos just sort of makes life worth living. It’s one of my favorite things.

Are there any final thoughts you would like to add?

Take your most METAL web browser (probably Chrome, because there are no other browsers named after a metal) and point it to the most METAL website on the face of the planet: LordsOfTheTrident.com. From there you’ll be able to hear our music, watch our videos, connect with us on social media, and buy a new set of armor for you and the missus! AV Amplified!//Desire For Oppression- Hatchet

Hello and welcome to another segment of AV Amplified!, the place where we review some of the coolest vids that the scene has to offer! This time, we have this killer video release from the thrash metal band Hatchet out of San Francisco, CA,  that was just signed onto Combat Records! This video was just dropped to give us all just a taste of what is to come from their new album “Dying To Exist“, which will be their first Combat Records release!

Directed by: Tsunami Films from the album DYING TO EXIST, in stores 6/22. Also available now on COMBAT BULLETS VOL 1.0!  Pre-order NOW at combatmerch.com!

This video is shot in what appears to be mostly in and around the recording studio, which I personally cannot think of a better place to shoot a video that is celebrating the release of a new album to come! It begins with the members preparing to be recorded and a zoom in on the lyrics of the song that is about to be played. This leads us to the band logo, and then right into this thrash-worthy tune! I love the perspective of this video. It brings us all right into the studio with Hatchet and gives us the feeling like we are standing right there with them.

It’s all about the fine details; there are all kinds of close-up shots of things within the studio from their instruments and the sound boards, to the food they are eating, it’s all there! This video is full of all kinds of personal moments with the band members as well as layering in image effects, but not too much to over-saturate us and take away that intimate feel. One of the best things about the music community is getting to know the bands and this video helped us see what a day with Hatchet would be like.

The whole thing has an awesome old school thrash vibe that reminded me of when MTV “used to be cool”. There is just enough of everything in this video and the timing is spot on! As for the track itself, there is a lot to be said! Its recording quality is amazing and the band is tight.  The vocals are heavy and very brutal, but clear. I love it when you can hear the message of the band. Julz has an amazing voice for thrash! It reminds me of the PERFECT combination of Testament, Slayer and Judas Priest. Clayton and Devin combine have such a full sound. The guitar switches perfectly between rhythm and leads and the bass backs all of this up perfectly. Ben is kickin’ it hardcore on the drums with perfectly timed stops and fills. Honestly, it’s no wonder they are under Combat Records! They fit right in perfectly!

AV Amplified!// Basement Nasty- The Red Flags

Welcome to AV Amplified! the section of Music Maehem where we review the latest in music videos from the local scene! The band filling this honored slot is none other than The Red Flags, which I am always happy to rant and rave about.

The title for this single and music video for The Red Flags is called “Basement Nasty.” Immediately, the video starts off in a flash of bright, contrasting colors that are present throughout the rest of the video. The song itself is reminiscent of a song that would have fit right in somehow in both the 60’s and still perfectly well today in 2018, and the video is a wonderful complement to that.

The video takes place in a basement, appropriately, lit by ropes of Christmas lights. Throughout the video, you can see the words “FUCK YOUR EARS” plastered on the wall in the background where the band takes turns being featured on the microphone. The phrase is also the chorus to the song, and I can’t think of a more suitable one—because this song is just a two-and-a-half minute long EAR-GASM!

I can’t get enough of the double vocals featured throughout the verses from both lead singer/guitarist Gabe and bassist Ally. Gabe’s harsh rap-esque lyrics and vocals with Ally’s melodic vocals being sang simultaneously supplement each other beautifully, creating a unique harmony to the entire song. Jonah plays his heart out on the skins in the background, and his two-beat-and-pause approach in the beginning of each verse pairs amazingly with the guitar riffs.

As I said in my previous post about this band, they have a Rage Against the Machine meets White Stripes vibe, and this video is a shining example to ring true to that notion.

Long story short, this whole production gave me an ear-boner. The Red Flags kick ass and so do this song and video!

The official release date is March 28th, 2018, and the video will be live on their YouTube channel, which you can find here :

Don’t forget to like them on Facebook of course also!!  https://www.facebook.com/theredflags/
