Weekend Warriors//Metal Interviews//Toxic Ruin

Toxic Ruin is a four piece, original, thrash metal band from Sheboygan, WI. Their sound contains a healthy mixture of thrash, death, and traditional heavy metal. Subterranean Terror, debuted in August 2016. Since then, Toxic Ruin has been writing and recording their second full length album which they promise will be heavy hitter (and will be if it’s anything close to Subterranean Terror.)

AV Amplified!//Desire For Oppression- Hatchet

Hello and welcome to another segment of AV Amplified!, the place where we review some of the coolest vids that the scene has to offer! This time, we have this killer video release from the thrash metal band Hatchet out of San Francisco, CA,  that was just signed onto Combat Records! This video was just dropped to give us all just a taste of what is to come from their new album “Dying To Exist“, which will be their first Combat Records release!

Directed by: Tsunami Films from the album DYING TO EXIST, in stores 6/22. Also available now on COMBAT BULLETS VOL 1.0!  Pre-order NOW at combatmerch.com!

This video is shot in what appears to be mostly in and around the recording studio, which I personally cannot think of a better place to shoot a video that is celebrating the release of a new album to come! It begins with the members preparing to be recorded and a zoom in on the lyrics of the song that is about to be played. This leads us to the band logo, and then right into this thrash-worthy tune! I love the perspective of this video. It brings us all right into the studio with Hatchet and gives us the feeling like we are standing right there with them.

It’s all about the fine details; there are all kinds of close-up shots of things within the studio from their instruments and the sound boards, to the food they are eating, it’s all there! This video is full of all kinds of personal moments with the band members as well as layering in image effects, but not too much to over-saturate us and take away that intimate feel. One of the best things about the music community is getting to know the bands and this video helped us see what a day with Hatchet would be like.

The whole thing has an awesome old school thrash vibe that reminded me of when MTV “used to be cool”. There is just enough of everything in this video and the timing is spot on! As for the track itself, there is a lot to be said! Its recording quality is amazing and the band is tight.  The vocals are heavy and very brutal, but clear. I love it when you can hear the message of the band. Julz has an amazing voice for thrash! It reminds me of the PERFECT combination of Testament, Slayer and Judas Priest. Clayton and Devin combine have such a full sound. The guitar switches perfectly between rhythm and leads and the bass backs all of this up perfectly. Ben is kickin’ it hardcore on the drums with perfectly timed stops and fills. Honestly, it’s no wonder they are under Combat Records! They fit right in perfectly!

AV Amplified!// Basement Nasty- The Red Flags

Welcome to AV Amplified! the section of Music Maehem where we review the latest in music videos from the local scene! The band filling this honored slot is none other than The Red Flags, which I am always happy to rant and rave about.

The title for this single and music video for The Red Flags is called “Basement Nasty.” Immediately, the video starts off in a flash of bright, contrasting colors that are present throughout the rest of the video. The song itself is reminiscent of a song that would have fit right in somehow in both the 60’s and still perfectly well today in 2018, and the video is a wonderful complement to that.

The video takes place in a basement, appropriately, lit by ropes of Christmas lights. Throughout the video, you can see the words “FUCK YOUR EARS” plastered on the wall in the background where the band takes turns being featured on the microphone. The phrase is also the chorus to the song, and I can’t think of a more suitable one—because this song is just a two-and-a-half minute long EAR-GASM!

I can’t get enough of the double vocals featured throughout the verses from both lead singer/guitarist Gabe and bassist Ally. Gabe’s harsh rap-esque lyrics and vocals with Ally’s melodic vocals being sang simultaneously supplement each other beautifully, creating a unique harmony to the entire song. Jonah plays his heart out on the skins in the background, and his two-beat-and-pause approach in the beginning of each verse pairs amazingly with the guitar riffs.

As I said in my previous post about this band, they have a Rage Against the Machine meets White Stripes vibe, and this video is a shining example to ring true to that notion.

Long story short, this whole production gave me an ear-boner. The Red Flags kick ass and so do this song and video!

The official release date is March 28th, 2018, and the video will be live on their YouTube channel, which you can find here :

Don’t forget to like them on Facebook of course also!!  https://www.facebook.com/theredflags/

Album Review//QuietKind- Shadow Play

This Wisconsin metalcore/groove metal band comes at us from the Wausau area. QuietKind released their first album Shadow Play this past January, 2018. If you love your music heavy, chaotic, groovy, and full of epic break downs, then you will be into this album!

Shadow Play is a djent-gasm to say the least, and is just full of everything you crave from metalcore. The vocals are heavy, yet comprehensible. The drums and bass are solid and the guitar leads are simply something amazing to behold! There are many bands coming out of Wisconsin that are of the metalcore variety, but QuietKind holds their own among them.

Currently they are on tour with another amazing Wisconsin metalcore band Pangaea.

28616687_439455736510218_778097641695600435_o

On the new album, the opening track “Failed State” is a great way to lead us off into what Shadow Play is all about. The vocalist breaks the seal with the bold and brutal statement “This is a failed state!” Carrying out this track with a guitar solo that is backed up with a bass-heavy break down and plenty of djent beats, which is the common theme of the album.

“Stray” is fast, furious and technical. Each chorus is different from the last giving a unique balance to the entire track in its entirety. Not one part of the track repeats itself which, as you know, usually there is something that is repeated within a song. During the melodic breakdown, it kind of reminded me of something like a space adventure, or like a sound track you would find in a video game.

“Limbo” is the djent highlight of this album. It has a horror type of vibe including a “creepy toy-like” synth track. This track is almost a two-part, as its ending blends so well into the beginning of the next track “The Worst Of Us”. This keeps things temporarily in the same horror realm.  The vocals are harder than the other tracks it seems, giving us a brutal climax to Shadow Play.

0010186475_10

“Dawn” is full of super technical guitar solos and interesting hooks. It feels like a rising, which makes sense to the title. The break down in this track is nothing short of epic. The guitar solo and theme very much reminds me of the style of the band Scale The Summit.

“Twilight” and “Dusk” both take a turn back into the brutal side of metalcore. “Twilight” is unique not only this album,  but to the whole metalcore genre overall because the entire track is a brutal instrumental until you get closer to the end. The vocalist has one final message before ending this song and it was almost like the breakdown was actually the vocals, which is an interesting twist!

Finally, “Dusk” leads us into the self-titled track of the album, “Shadow Play”. Definitely the best track on the album, so it’s no wonder they chose this one for their lyrical video. It is one last highlight of all the talents of each member. This track is a very strong finish.

When you listen to this album, you really get a lot out of every minute. Shadow Play is a very full album. QuietKind is a very tight band and the recording quality is great. We are looking forward to another album in the future, but for now, we will be keeping our eyes out on the scene to see them live!

If you want to see QuietKind, their next show is in Damien’s Den in Lancing, IL.

Weekend Warriors//Punk Interviews//Color Killer!

Color Killer is the new punk prodigy band located in Marlborough, MA. Fun fact about this punk band is: They are all kids! That’s correct, you read that right. I first found them on accident on Facebook when a video popped up in my feed. The first song I ever heard was their original tune “Down With Winter” and I was just blown away. There was so much talent at such a young age, and it was punk! It brought a tear to my eye to know that in this world today with all its craziness punk is still very much alive and well. Influenced by bands such as Green Day, Blink-182, Teenage Bottle Rocket and The Prozacs they are really making a difference and fast. They are also working currently with Jay Gauvin of The Prozacs writing a few songs. Upon contacting them, I actually found out that Lincoln, guitarist and lead vocalist for Color Killer, actually had the opportunity to join Green Day on stage. Which in itself is impressive and certainly an opportunity I would die for, but that being said, Color Killer stands all on its own.

PSX_20180124_232522.jpg

Color Killer is a very unique name! I definitely get a Punk vibe from that right away! Can you tell me where you got the name from?

We were trying to come up with a name and were all just saying stuff. One of us said Color Killer and we all said : “Yeah, let’s use it”

Speaking of colors, I love your look! Who does your hair and what brand of dye do you use? Just out of curiosity haha.

Our parents do our hair, well, except for Nate who thinks he’s so special that he has to go to a professional. We don’t know what brand of dye we use.

How has being in a band changed your life? Is it difficult to balance your band life with school?

Our weekends are pretty busy with practicing or playing shows. We also practicing or playing shows. We also practice a couple days a week after school. We’re still pretty young and don’t get a lot of homework. We also don’t usually play shows on school nights.

I saw your recent videos featuring original songs, very well done! Can you tell me a bit about what inspires you to write?

We just play around come with a melody, then we have a couple of people that help us with the lyrics.

What do your friends and/or classmates think about your band? Have they seen you play?

Most of them think it’s cool. Some say only nerds are in bands. Some if them have come to see us play at shows. Some of our teachers have come to see us too.

Where was your very first show as a band? What was it like?

Our first show as a band was at Ralph’s in Worcester, at the end of last summer. It was a lot of fun.

Is there anything else you would like to tell your fans? Do you have a new album coming up or a tour planned?

We are going to start recording our first album in the next couple of weeks.

We will be playing the Ernie Ball Stage at the Vans Warped Tour in July 27th in Mansfield, MA

I just simply can not stress how important it is to the music community as a whole that a band like Color Killer exists. I feel like a lot of times when youth are experiencing creative outlets, they often get discouraged at a very young age by their parents or other adults. I’m not sure adults even ever really realize it, but I know I have seen it before as well as experienced it myself. One scenario I can think of from the top of my head was one Christmas I was with family and I over heard a child say proudly ” When I grow up I want to be and artist!” the jaded parent replied, “Well, that’s a nice hobby honey, but what do you want to do for a real job? You can’t make money off of art”

In that moment…that is when a dream dies. That kind of thing needs to change and it starts here. This is how we save the world. Thank you so much once again to Color Killer for taking time with me to tell a bit about their story and a special thank you to their parents, guardians, and other people who stand behind and encourage them daily. You all rock!
