Weekend Warriors//Metal Interviews// Lords Of The Trident

Welcome once again to Weekend Warriors! Today we are featuring an interview with some actual warriors–this band of barbarians from our very own Madison, Wisconsin known as Lords Of The Trident! To help you get to know this savage band we have the members:

LordsGroup2017_3_sm

Fang VonWrathenstein – Lead Vocals
Baron Taurean Helleshaar – Lead Guitar
Asian Metal – Lead Guitar
Pontifex Mortis – Lead Bass
Master “Herc” Hercule Schlagzeuger – Lead Drums

Their biography is truly a tale to behold (we strongly encourage you to read it!), but instead we will feature their smaller summary:

Our metal’s so pure that only diamonds can scratch it, and usually the diamonds are the ones that end up getting hurt in the end. Our amps are so loud, Manowar knocked on our door and asked us to “please turn down”. You think you’re bad? While you’re watching our sweep picking wondering how we bend space-time to fit all the notes in, we’ll punch you right in the face without missing a beat. If you like battle, bloodshed, axes, fire, and losing limbs, then mosh your way to the front row and receive your free ticket to Valhalla. If you don’t like these things – too bad. We’re playing anyway, and we’ll make sure to steal your girlfriend in the process.

We have been hearing so much about Lords Of The Trident, that we simply couldn’t wait to feature them! After all, we love ourselves some good ‘ole power metal!!

Behold! The Music Maehem interview with Lords Of The Trident!!

I read your bio on your web page, and it was very well thought out! That is one epic metal tale! For those who have just recently heard of you, what can you tell us about yourselves?

Hails to all your readers! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Lords of the Trident — the band that will soon rule over all of humanity with an iron fist — know this: we are the most METAL band on earth! We combine elements of traditional, power, and modern heavy metal into a perfect concoction of face-melting goodness, and we use this unrelenting power to put on one of the best live shows you’ve ever seen. Take a listen to one of our songs – if your head doesn’t explode in the first thirty seconds, you’re probably a strong barbarian warrior, and should join our minion army!

On June 22nd and 23rd, you will be making your way to the Great White North with show dates in Canada– tell us a bit about that!

Yes! We’re rather excited to head back to the land to the North. Last time we crossed the border, we had a larger Canadian tour planned, but alas – our TERRIBLE touring van prevented us from completing our voyage. CURSE that evil, evil van! I’m glad it’s currently crushed into a small cube (and likely still on fire). Now that we’ve got a more reliable touring vehicle (that we just paid off, thanks to our Patreon backers!), we’re going to try a short stint first, and see how it goes. Assuming our steed stays reliable, we may just try for a longer tour in the very near future. Either way, I’m going to be enjoying the scratch-n-sniff money that Canada uses. Did you know it smells like maple syrup? I’ve also been told by reliable sources that Justin Trudeau also uses that scent as his aftershave. Mmmmm….breakfast-y.

Your Patreon is very successful! That’s really impressive stuff! Can you please elaborate on what fans can find on your Patreon? What are some things that your fans can get if they sign up to be a Patron?

Absolutely! Patreon has been our greatest boon since the invention of fire-proof underwear, and we do our best to shower our Patreon backers in special prizes and exclusive merch. After all, anyone who pledges to our Patreon must first complete a test of strength and fortitude. Backers at certain levels get things like Patreon-exclusive shirts (that the band prints ourselves), live show bootlegs, fully-mixed acoustic covers, and more! We also create exclusive video content for our backers like Fang’s Metal Beer Club, the TRIDENTCast, and more content that we have planned for the near future. We send out so much stuff, it really is one of the BEST METAL DEALS on the internet. Check it out at Patreon.com/LordsOfTheTrident .

I saw you also started a Kick Starter to begin building the funding for your newest album, Shadows From The Past, which is lucky number 7, and due to be released in August. What are we to expect from this album? Paint us a pretty word picture.

Shadows from the Past is undoubtedly the most complex, mature, and intensely METAL album we’ve ever put together – EVER! We’ve been hard at work on this album for a number of years, and it includes guest appearances from Unleash the Archers and Psychostick, as well as a full symphony orchestra, choir, string quartet, and more. Anyone who’s a fan of our previous album is in for a treat, because we feel that our songwriting, recording quality, and mix has improved exponentially over the last three years. I feel very strongly that it’s going to contain some immediate fan favorites, and perhaps some songs that some may argue are the best we’ve ever written. We’re all incredibly excited to release it!

34395347_10156608470579427_4230979211071848448_o

You also have the release party as well at the Mad With Power Fest! That sounds like a killer time! Fill us in!

For years we’ve struggled to be included on certain fests around the states, so we decided: “TO HELL with them! We’ll just make our own fest!” So we did! And we combined two of our favorite things in life: Heavy Metal and ARCADE GAMES! Mad With Power is our yearly celebration of some of the best underground and independent heavy metal bands in North America, combined with an unmatchable free-play arcade experience! We line the entire venue with TONS of arcade games on free-play, and this year we’re going to have access to some exclusive cabinets that you can’t see or play anywhere else IN THE WORLD! Every year our fest has grown, and this year is the strongest ever. Those denizens interested in sampling the bands and/or attending should grab a ticket at MadWithPowerFest.com

Just out of curiosity, do you guys make all of your own videos? Or is there a guy on the inside you would like to give a shout out to?

We do! I (Fang) make all the videos from scratch. Adding fire and explosions to videos just sort of makes life worth living. It’s one of my favorite things.

AV AMPLIFIED!//Distortion- Baby Metal

Welcome once again to AV AMPLIFIED!, where we feature the hottest music videos on the scene! This time, we are featuring everybody’s most favorite kawaii metal band: Baby Metal!

There seems to have been much debate as far as this band goes. I know a lot of those “die hard” metal fans who like to go around saying what is truly “metal” and what isn’t. But when you listen to Baby Metal, sorry to break it to you, but it’s about as metal as it gets! It’s the perfect combination of classic J-pop and modern death metal. These brutal babes will rip your heart out, take a bite out, and shove it right back in.

I, for one, just happily accept it.

Baby Metal has made quite the statement in the world, topping charts and performing giant festivals right alongside some of the greatest metal artists of all time including, but not limited to: the Big 4 (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer), Korn, Rob Zombie, Guns N Roses, Judas Priest and many others to come! I have also seen them in pictures with Alice Cooper, so you know that if they are Alice approved, they just have to be great.

Baby Metal have just released their newest single “Distortion”, which continues on the saga in the Metal Resistance through the release of Episode VII Apocrypha of Metal Resistance – The Chosen Seven . This was in celebration of their 2018 tour! (Dates below)

28279767_1165009573636416_1081514020464257030_n

Unfortunately for me and many others, the tour is pretty small so they won’t be coming to Wisconsin, but that doesn’t mean they won’t have a date in the future for us! (PLEEEEEEEEEAAAASSSEEEEE!!!! P.S I wouldn’t say no to free tickets!)

With all that being said, let’s take a look at their new video– “Distortion”.

[Distortion] Available!

【Apple Music – BABYMETAL】
https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/ba…

【Spotify – BABYMETAL】
http://open.spotify.com/artist/630wzN

This tune doesn’t mess around. It’s brutal right from the very first blast beat! Fast, brutal and triumphant, with a hint of an industrial metal element in the mix. The angelic pop voices of Su-metal, Yuimetal, and Moametal burst through the thunder of the band, yet they never steal the spotlight. It always merges so well, and that continues to hold solid in “Distortion”.

In this video, we are introduced to the Chosen Seven as they appear in the apocalyptic cityscape ready for battle. Each character is depicted to be unique from one another and have each their own unique ability. Throughout the video, the warriors are battling large demonic entities.

z2n375rgm3ax.png

This video definitely goes all out. Beautiful cinematic effects, breath-taking costume designs, and the makeup is flawless. It brings the whole story to life. When I watch this video, I feel like I’m watching a trailer for a movie that’s about to be the next summer block buster. Although it’s short, the whole experience is memorable!

This video also raised a lot of questions as to what has happened to Yuimetal, and who exactly these “Chosen Seven” are. From what I have gathered, Yuimetal is still very much in the band but will not be touring due to a “medical condition”. Hopefully all is well for her as many Baby Metal fans are worried for her, including myself.

Regardless, I’m looking forward to what is to come in the career of Baby Metal.

“Baby Metal’s challenge for world domination continues and only the Fox God knows what the future will hold.” – Baby Metal Official

Weekend Warriors//Metal Interview//Black Road

Hello readers and welcome to Weekend Warriors with stoner doom metal band Black Road from Chicago, Ilinois. Founded in June of 2015, members Suzi Uzi (vocals, piano, lyrics), Tim (guitar) came together and were later joined by Robert (drums) and Casey (bass) just in time for the release of their first self-titled EP, which was released on cassette and vinyl with DHU Records.  BloodRock Records (Italy) later signed Black Road for a limited-edition CD run, which was officially released the day the album went live on October 6, 2017.

I was able to spend some time with vocalist and founder Suzi Uzi at the Reptile Palace in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to talk about the journey down the Black Road for her and the band as well as what is to come for them in the near future.

What was the inspiration of your self-titled EP Black Road?

All of our tracks stand on their own. There was no particular concept. The music is riff inspired. So it all starts there and then we build off of it. It’s really the feeling of the music that inspires us.

Where can we see you in the future?

Doomed and Stoned Fest in Chicago, IL. Friday, June 1st (2018) and Attalla will be there as well. Otherwise, for May and June we will be focused on writing the new album, which is about halfway finished. We are hoping to finish it by the end of June.

On July 2nd, we are appearing at the Empty Bottle in Chicago, IL, and October 5th we will be at the Doomed and Stoned Fest in Indianapolis at the Indiana City Beer Co. October 6th we are going to be at Reggie’s in Chicago with Mos Generator. Tony Reed of Mos Generator mixed and remastered the songs on our debut album as well as included a vintage mellotrone on the 4th track.

Check out Mos Generator as well in the link: https://www.facebook.com/MosGenerator/

I saw that you have a YouTube channel, how is that working to promote your band?

Our lyric video for “Red” was released in July of 2016 and that lead to us being signed to our first record label DHU Records the following August. We had 20,000 views in the first few days on Facebook and we are over 20,000 views on YouTube now as well. We also released a video for our track “Bloody Mary” in 2017. It contains a demo version of the track not found on our EP.  It seems like it’s definitely gotten us noticed.

View Bloody Mary here! Also be sure to subscribe to their channel!

I found Black Road to be very groovy, heavy and melodic. A wide array of people in the crowd liked their music and everyone eagerly moved to the stage when it was their turn to play. Although their songs are very long (averaging 10 mins) people never grow bored and seem to never want it to end. They were all very friendly and welcoming people. I was very happy to feature them for Music Maehem. It was great to be a part of their show!

On The Road//Stonefest 4/20

Welcome to another great show On The Road with Music Maehem! There were a lot of amazing shows going on over the 4/20 weekend in celebration of the “green” but the one we are featuring this year is the 16th annual Stonefest presented by Grave Marker Music and the band Headstone.

There were two stages with bands for feature, one on the first level and a second upstairs. The switch over between the two stages ran very smoothly and everything rolled right into one another without a hitch.  I arrived just in time to catch the first band Seven Cities Dead. They were full of brutality which was a great way to start this evening of metal. The second band to follow was our good friends Shield The Survivors. They played the second stage as well in the upper area. They had a lot of energy which started to draw in the evening crowd quite quickly.  After they were done loading everything up, we stayed to catch some of the set for the Rictus Grin. They had a very unique twist to thrash that kept you moving and was very entertaining. The crowd brought waffles and threw them at Rictus Grin during their tune about beer and waffles which only added to the entertainment.

After my interview with Shield the survivors, I floated through the crowd and talked to some fans about a how well the turn out was and how the lineup was very consistent. It was nice to see multiple generes of bands on the bill as well. I unfortunately had A.K.F. business to do as well so I didn’t get a chance to film every band at the show, but there was no ill words said about a single performance.

Shane had some amazing things to say about the history of 420, and everyone was really into the spirit of the holiday the entire night. I was definitely honored to be a part of Stone Fest this year. Triple P’s is an amazing venue for smaller festival type shows. They  appreciate what  we are trying to do as local musicians and are very respectful to our community.  I  look forward to many more Stone Fests and other shows at this venue in the future!

Av Amplified!//Rats!- Ghost

Ghost is a band that has shown up and taken us all by surprise from the very beginning. Shrouded in mystery, the members all hide behind masks, makeup, and are lead by their frontman, who is always dressed very dapper. Together, Ghost is a devil-worshiping ministry whose mission is, as it states in their biography, “to spread its unholy gospels and, furthermore, trick mankind into believing the end is ultimately a good thing, and have decided to use the ever-so-popular rock music medium as a way to achieve their ends.”

For those of you who haven’t had the experience of Ghost, one thing we will tell you is that they have had a few different “identities” for their leader and frontman, and most recently have been under the pseudonym Papa Emeritus. Those who took over would then assume this title and add the appropriate numeral after. However, most recently, Ghost shocked us all once again with the announcement of their newest leader Cardinal Copia, who is “not of the bloodline.” They made this announcement by releasing a 2 part video leaving us all on the edge of our seats.

It’s fair to say that when we all saw Cardinal Copia, we were all a bit surprised, even Papa himself seemed a bit taken back, as seen in the second chapter of the reveal videos. He comes off as a lot less intimidating than the others in the bloodline. However, after this release it’s easy to see that looks can be deceiving and that we should not underestimate our new leader!

ghost_cardinalcopia_2018

So with that, we welcome you to another great segment of AV Amplified! featuring Ghost’s newest single “Rats”! (Released April, FRIDAY THE 13TH, 2018)

Directed by: Roboshobo

We begin with a few clips of the street, one in which features a sign that states “the end is near” and of course, the rats, as the title of the single is made relevant. The opening riff sounds like something off of the Queensryche album Operation Mind Crime, which is already something much different than what Ghost has given us in the past. This track, as well as the video itself seems to have more of an 80’s era style. We know that Ghost tends to have an “old school” style to begin with. Most of their tunes seem to be influenced heavily by the 60’s and 70’s as well, which is also reflected through their merchandise. Lately, it seems that vinyls and cassettes have been on the up rise, and with the release of this new album, we can even get it on an 8 track! So be sure to dust off your old players or hit up your nearest secondhand stores so you can get a taste of this beauty in one of its purest forms!

We are introduced to the featured Nameless Ghouls and lead past the death and destruction into a diner where Cardinal Copia is casually finishing up his meal. The power is flickering slightly and it’s at this point that he gives us the first lyrics we ever hear from our new leader:

“In times of Turmoil, in times like these. Belief’s contagious, Spreading disease”

The video is set in what appears to be a catastrophic event in the near future.  There are dead bodies, people in HazMat suits, fire, crashed cars, and rats feasting on the remains. Cardinal breaks into dance as the tune begins to take full force. We start to see his personality shine through. He is enjoying himself and dancing in the street like it’s the best day in the world. Showing his youthful spirit and sense of humor, it would appear that the Cardinal is every bit as twisted, if not more so, as the previous Papas.

The lighting is low as it is mostly lit by the fire of the destruction all around, creating warm tones that contrast well with the dark sinister cool tones of the night. When the camera flashes to the Ghouls playing, they too have a bit of a warm tone to their lighting which correctly sets the mood. It almost reflects the “end times” as a positive thing, which would be their perspective on the situation. They also have a sort of “old film filter” over the shots which puts the video together as a horror film as well, continuing the theme from their last single video release for “Square Hammer” back in 2016.  The angles of the film draw you into each frame as we bounce between the Ghouls playing and Cardinal Copia’s choreography.  It would seem as well that the Ghouls are representing more the serious elements of Ghost’s message being featured in the graveyard and the morgue while Cardinal Copia is dancing about in the streets. After the introduction of the backup dancers, it fades into the guitar solo.

As always, the guitar solo is full of beauty and passion. Ghost always has a rhythm to them that stands out from other bands. Sexy and seductive, it makes you want to dance along with them. This holds true throughout their entire career as well as this song in particular. The vocals, as always hold a beauty and grace of their own. The vocal pattern is catchy, fun, and very pop-inspired. The way he rolls the “R” in Rats! makes you want to stand with him and chime in passionately as the backup. “Oh-owhaaa Oh’s” kick in, bringing the whole song to life as we come to the climax. The subtle, yet prominent keys, the drums, the bass; they all come together wonderfully with the chorus as we are shown more beautiful syncopated choreography, which seems to be another new element brought to us with the appearance and personality of the Cardinal, reminding us of more of the 80’s type of elements. There are dance moves taken from all sorts of places– everything from “Thriller” by Michael Jackson to the theatrical performance of Phantom of the Opera, with just a sprinkle of modern pop artists. To us, it especially reminded us of Lady Gaga and her video for her single “Marry the Night”.

This tune gets especially heavy as we reach the end, almost doom-esque. There is an appearance of a white horse at the edge of the city, which we can speculate comes from the Bible passage:

“Then, I saw the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, ‘Come’. I looked, and behold, a white horse and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.” – Revelation 6:1-2 (NA SB)

We infer that this represents that the Cardinal Copia is ready for conquest and victory.

Ghost always talks about their pop influences, such as Abba– they gracefully combine this influence with elements of rock as well as doom metal. They make it hard to really nail down a set category or genre to their music, which is more than okay! Some argue whether Ghost is actually a metal band or not, but it doesn’t at all matter in the end. Ghost is unique, beautiful and an entity all their own. The fact that they don’t fit into one solidly packaged box only adds to their overall mystique. They continue to pull dark themes and disguise them with enthusiasm. However, all fans of Ghost know this is just part of their art of deception. We are not sure what we will be able to expect from the rest of the PREQUELLE album but we are quivering with anticipation!

“Them filthy rodents are still coming for your souls..”

Front Row//Hi/Jack

From the great land of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this week’s Front Row Friday feature is the one and only Hi/Jack!
This two piece band made up of guitarist and vocalist Max Theisenhusen (aka Jack) and drummer and backup vocalist Ron Terrell, Hi/Jack brings their unique and refreshing old-school style of pure rock and roll as a breath of fresh air into our local scene. Between Max’s incredible drawn out guitar solos that make you feel like you’re wrapped up in a groovy warm blanket, and Ron’s jazz-meets-punk beats, with equally fantastic drum solos that knock you flat on your ass, Hi/Jack is sure to keep your body jiving throughout their whole set.
This week’s feature showcases Hi/Jack at the Back Bar in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Their new EP, Sunny Side Up, recorded at the infamous Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee!) is set to be released on April 21st, 2018, but is also available for pre-order now on Amazon and iTunes! (link below)

AV Amplified!// Basement Nasty- The Red Flags

Welcome to AV Amplified! the section of Music Maehem where we review the latest in music videos from the local scene! The band filling this honored slot is none other than The Red Flags, which I am always happy to rant and rave about.

The title for this single and music video for The Red Flags is called “Basement Nasty.” Immediately, the video starts off in a flash of bright, contrasting colors that are present throughout the rest of the video. The song itself is reminiscent of a song that would have fit right in somehow in both the 60’s and still perfectly well today in 2018, and the video is a wonderful complement to that.

The video takes place in a basement, appropriately, lit by ropes of Christmas lights. Throughout the video, you can see the words “FUCK YOUR EARS” plastered on the wall in the background where the band takes turns being featured on the microphone. The phrase is also the chorus to the song, and I can’t think of a more suitable one—because this song is just a two-and-a-half minute long EAR-GASM!

I can’t get enough of the double vocals featured throughout the verses from both lead singer/guitarist Gabe and bassist Ally. Gabe’s harsh rap-esque lyrics and vocals with Ally’s melodic vocals being sang simultaneously supplement each other beautifully, creating a unique harmony to the entire song. Jonah plays his heart out on the skins in the background, and his two-beat-and-pause approach in the beginning of each verse pairs amazingly with the guitar riffs.

As I said in my previous post about this band, they have a Rage Against the Machine meets White Stripes vibe, and this video is a shining example to ring true to that notion.

Long story short, this whole production gave me an ear-boner. The Red Flags kick ass and so do this song and video!

The official release date is March 28th, 2018, and the video will be live on their YouTube channel, which you can find here :

Don’t forget to like them on Facebook of course also!!  https://www.facebook.com/theredflags/

One Night Stand//Split Single// Burial Ground- Order Of Unukalhai and BeetleGork

It’s time for a One Night Stand and this time you are going home with two doom metal beauties. Burial Ground is a unique release featuring two bands coming together to form one special edition single! The first track is brought to you by Order Of Unukalhai, whom we featured earlier this month in our monthly segment of Fresh Blood. In case you didn’t read the article (which I strongly encourage you to do), Order Of The Unukalhai is a doom/black metal band. Beetlegork, however, is a band we haven’t yet introduced you to yet.
Beetlegork is a 3 piece death/sludge metal band from Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin, that began in 2016. Besides their part in this single, they also have an EP out called Trepanation and are currently working on an album that they will be releasing this summer!

0010065018_10
We get hit hard and heavy as the tragic tale of a small port town begins. “Seabeast”, the first track on the album, is Beetlegork’s chapter to the two-part tale.

This track truly captures our imagination as we begin to see the attack before our eyes. The beasts have risen to take the innocent souls of the town, engulfing them and taking those who do not survive into a watery grave. The brave fight for their lives against the vicious beasts of peril, but to no avail; for those who survived became beasts themselves!
The guitar riffs stay true to the nature of death metal, reminding us of the styles of Mastodon. These intense riffs really bring a lot of emotion into the music, making it easier to feel the tragic event as if we were directly experiencing it for ourselves. As you listen through, it starts to trail off into the slower break down. This part has us reflecting on another amazing tale of the song “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” by Iron Maiden. In this breakdown, you can feel the heartbreak and defeat as we are lead underwater.
The sounds now become hollow and start to have an echo as we plummet deeper and deeper and the survivors become one with the beasts… The lyrical content is something you definitely shouldn’t overlook either. The vocals are in the brutal style of death metal with a truly passionate undertone. The drums and bass back everything up with a heavy tempo and it all comes together beautifully.
In the second track, “Burial Ground” everything slows down as Order Of Unukalhai takes over to tell us the rest of this tale. The slow tempo and sway of the guitar riffs have us feeling the exhaustion and hopelessness of our characters. They have now been taken hostage by their new nature as beasts, which are fueled by the hatred and loss of their former lives. The beast gives this tale the punch of brutality it needs to finish us off. After all, this was not a happy tale.
The combination of these two bands was one of epic proportion. It had just the right amount of fast death metal and slow doom metal. When we first heard of this split single, we were already excited to see what we would get and it blew our expectations completely out of the water!
(…No pun intended.)
We strongly urge you to go out there and get this album to your ear holes right now! You can find it in the link below–hard copies will be available soon as well, and you can get them at a Beetlegork or Order of Unukalhai show soon!
You can see them both play together March 30th at Frank’s Powerplant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The first time I saw WRATH was at the Q and Z in Ringle, WI but that was before I was working on these interviews. However I still had the opportunity to meet them then. After speaking with them they brought a kind of wisdom to me about the music scene and how amazing it was. So, of course now that I have been working on Music Maehem, my thoughts turned to them so that all of you could hear directly from the source what these guys are like. So, for those of you who haven’t met them, I formally introduce to you WRATH:

This was filmed at an amazing venue way up in the Northwoods area of Woodruff, WI! Be sure to check out Happy’s Bar!
