FRESH BLOOD// BITTER COLD

This month for the May Edition of Fresh Blood, we present Bitter Cold.
Bitter Cold is a self-dubbed “whiskey metal” band based out of Madison, Wisconsin. Bringing elements of thrash, death, and prog metal in tow, their performances and music are always one hell of a ride from start to finish. They’re new with only a handful of shows under their belt, but with everyone’s previous (and current) experience in other bands, they take the stage like pros and enchant the audience with ease with their one-of-a-kind headbanging experience.

They already have merch available, including t-shirts that blast the phrase “FUCK WINTER” emblazoned across an outline of our state, Bitter Cold’s message is clear–“embody what you hate and tell it to fuck right off.”

If you haven’t had the chance to see Bitter Cold yet, they have one hell of a summer ahead of them, so go over to their facebook page and give them a like so you don’t miss them at the next venue near you!

Weekend Warriors//Metal Interview//Black Road

Hello readers and welcome to Weekend Warriors with stoner doom metal band Black Road from Chicago, Ilinois. Founded in June of 2015, members Suzi Uzi (vocals, piano, lyrics), Tim (guitar) came together and were later joined by Robert (drums) and Casey (bass) just in time for the release of their first self-titled EP, which was released on cassette and vinyl with DHU Records.  BloodRock Records (Italy) later signed Black Road for a limited-edition CD run, which was officially released the day the album went live on October 6, 2017.

I was able to spend some time with vocalist and founder Suzi Uzi at the Reptile Palace in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to talk about the journey down the Black Road for her and the band as well as what is to come for them in the near future.

What was the inspiration of your self-titled EP Black Road?

All of our tracks stand on their own. There was no particular concept. The music is riff inspired. So it all starts there and then we build off of it. It’s really the feeling of the music that inspires us.

Where can we see you in the future?

Doomed and Stoned Fest in Chicago, IL. Friday, June 1st (2018) and Attalla will be there as well. Otherwise, for May and June we will be focused on writing the new album, which is about halfway finished. We are hoping to finish it by the end of June.

On July 2nd, we are appearing at the Empty Bottle in Chicago, IL, and October 5th we will be at the Doomed and Stoned Fest in Indianapolis at the Indiana City Beer Co. October 6th we are going to be at Reggie’s in Chicago with Mos Generator. Tony Reed of Mos Generator mixed and remastered the songs on our debut album as well as included a vintage mellotrone on the 4th track.

Check out Mos Generator as well in the link: https://www.facebook.com/MosGenerator/

I saw that you have a YouTube channel, how is that working to promote your band?

Our lyric video for “Red” was released in July of 2016 and that lead to us being signed to our first record label DHU Records the following August. We had 20,000 views in the first few days on Facebook and we are over 20,000 views on YouTube now as well. We also released a video for our track “Bloody Mary” in 2017. It contains a demo version of the track not found on our EP.  It seems like it’s definitely gotten us noticed.

View Bloody Mary here! Also be sure to subscribe to their channel!

I found Black Road to be very groovy, heavy and melodic. A wide array of people in the crowd liked their music and everyone eagerly moved to the stage when it was their turn to play. Although their songs are very long (averaging 10 mins) people never grow bored and seem to never want it to end. They were all very friendly and welcoming people. I was very happy to feature them for Music Maehem. It was great to be a part of their show!

There were many people in attendance of this show. The venue was packed from wall to wall with supporters-band members and fans alike. Metal 4 Muttz also put together a raffle as well as food that was provided for those who were volunteering their time at the event. The weather that day was more than perfect for the event as well, it was the first nice day in what had seemed like an eternity. So, this was the perfect excuse to leave the house, not to mention the fact that it was for an amazing cause. We took the time to not only photograph and film the bands but also to interview with some of the people who helped this event be possible. Featured is Shannon Barden, Brittnay Loka, and Cat Taylor.

Gearview Mirror//Mason Burglund- Guitarist: Beetlegork

Hello again, local readers and gear enthusiasts. Welcome to another look through the local Gearview Mirror. This week I am featuring the seismic tone and gear of Mason Berglund of Beetlegork. He’s got some interesting things to show us so let’s get down to business.

As usual we start with the axe. This is my personal favorite piece of his tone puzzle. I’ve always liked finding other guitarists that play “Frankenstein” guitars, and this axe is nothing short of it.  With a distressed L.T.D. body,(that has gone through hell and back) this beast gives all the right vibes.Which, you would expect from its appearance and personality when waiting for the first note. As for pickups, Mason has filled the void with B.C. Rich pulled from a broken acrylic B.C. Rich guitar.

IMG_8547

On Masons Pedalboard building this huge tone I discovered:

A Y split pedal made by Saturnwerks that allows him to split his signal and run both signals though at once.

IMG_8535
A Rowin Noise Gate. (Any noise gate is necessary in any board).

IMG_8536

A Tuner Power : Tuner/ power supply. This is some creative, original, and convenient shit I first witnessed through this interview, and am getting one for sure!

IMG_8537
A Superego synth engine is the next on the chain list.

IMG_8538
Followed by a Tremoverb: Tremolo / reverb combo pedal. Made by Daddy Daughter pedals.

IMG_8543

Heavy Metal HM 2 for distortion

IMG_8539

And ending with a Nux: Time force analog delay simulation pedal.

IMG_8542

All of these pedals are on constantly, so don’t think any bit of this unnecessary. Every step is just as important as the last when your building you “Identity” as a guitarist, and I must say his tone is certainly a diamond in in the local rough.

Mason uses a Peavey XXL Transtube series 100 for his amplifier. Although I usually find Peavey in the thrash circuit, but this baby could find a place anywhere in the versatile rock world.

IMG_8548

The final piece of the monster that is Mason Berglund is his crazy vintage cabinet. This baby emanates age and nestalgia and has “the balls” to boot.

IMG_8549

All in all, I can say I am very happy I decided to feature this gear. There was definitely something to take from the consistency and width  in his tone that left me feeling like I was embarking on a journey I would never forget.

Be sure to check out Beetlegork in the link below!

Thank you all for joining me back stage for another look through the Gearview Mirror.

On The Road//Stonefest 4/20

Welcome to another great show On The Road with Music Maehem! There were a lot of amazing shows going on over the 4/20 weekend in celebration of the “green” but the one we are featuring this year is the 16th annual Stonefest presented by Grave Marker Music and the band Headstone.

There were two stages with bands for feature, one on the first level and a second upstairs. The switch over between the two stages ran very smoothly and everything rolled right into one another without a hitch.  I arrived just in time to catch the first band Seven Cities Dead. They were full of brutality which was a great way to start this evening of metal. The second band to follow was our good friends Shield The Survivors. They played the second stage as well in the upper area. They had a lot of energy which started to draw in the evening crowd quite quickly.  After they were done loading everything up, we stayed to catch some of the set for the Rictus Grin. They had a very unique twist to thrash that kept you moving and was very entertaining. The crowd brought waffles and threw them at Rictus Grin during their tune about beer and waffles which only added to the entertainment.

After my interview with Shield the survivors, I floated through the crowd and talked to some fans about a how well the turn out was and how the lineup was very consistent. It was nice to see multiple generes of bands on the bill as well. I unfortunately had A.K.F. business to do as well so I didn’t get a chance to film every band at the show, but there was no ill words said about a single performance.

Shane had some amazing things to say about the history of 420, and everyone was really into the spirit of the holiday the entire night. I was definitely honored to be a part of Stone Fest this year. Triple P’s is an amazing venue for smaller festival type shows. They  appreciate what  we are trying to do as local musicians and are very respectful to our community.  I  look forward to many more Stone Fests and other shows at this venue in the future!
